Welcome to week 3 of Seriously Geeky Sundays! Monarchies pop up in multiple genres and have always fascinated me. As a child, it was British history, particularly the Kings and Queens of Britain that caught my attention. Now it’s stories of fantasy battles and political intrigue, of space princesses and long lost royal lineages. Continue reading to find out more about my favourite royal characters and I look forward to reading about your favourites too!
As it’s the third Sunday of the month that means next month’s questions have now been released too! May has a nice mixture of topics and I hope you’ll have as much fun answering them as I did creating them.
Seriously Geeky Sundays is a brand new weekly geeky prompt starting today. If you’re new then head over to the SGS information page to learn everything you need to know.
At the end of this post is a link-up for you to pop a link to your own answers into it.

My answers for week #3
Who is your favourite female royal character?
There have been a lot of female royal characters that have meant a lot to me and it was hard to choose a favourite. I was surprised to find that it wasn’t one from my childhood, such as Leia or Adora, but rather one that I found in recent years. I decided to read the Wonder Woman comics prior to the film being released and I finally began to understand why so many people loved her.
Over the last few years I’ve fell more in love with Diana. I’ve seen her at her most vulnerable, and at her strongest, and there really is no one quite like her. I honestly forgot she was a Princess because that’s not even the most important thing about her. It’s just one single aspect of a multifaceted character.
Who is your favourite male royal character?
I’ve watched Anduin grow up from a young boy who was kidnapped by a dragon to become an extraordinary King. He caught my attention in the novel World of Warcraft: The Shattering where he spent time in Ironforge learning from the Dwarves, and then later in the Mists of Pandaria expansion he went off on his own, taking his own path. He is someone who could have taken the easy route in life and instead has always chosen to put the effort in. He’s worked hard to understand people and not just the people of the Alliance. Anduin doesn’t just want to lead, he wants to help to make Azeroth to be a better place for everyone. In World of Warcraft: Before the Storm he goes beyond the call of duty to help members of the Forsaken reunite with their human loved ones. It backfires and he ends up mourning for the loss of Forsaken life just as if they were members of the Alliance.
And let us not forget that he is the only person who punched a dragon without any hesitation. That makes him a pretty epic person in my book.
Who is your favourite royal couple?
My favourite couple were two strong contenders for the first two questions; Queen Thayet and King Jonathon from Tamora Pierce’s Tortall series. Both characters were originally introduced in The Song of the Lioness Quartet and I fell in love with both of them individually, then even more so as a couple. Now that Tortall has been picked up as a TV show I’m looking forward to more people falling in love with these characters too!
What is your favourite storyline involving a royal character?
The main character of the Chronicles of the Necromancer book series is Prince Martris ‘Tris’ Drayke, second in line to the throne and living a happy life until his elder half-brother decides to murder their father and overthrow the throne. Tris’ entire world is turned upside down and he has to flee the palace with his friends. To complicate matters Tris may be the mage heir to the great sorcerer, Bava K’aa, his grandmother.
The book series follows Tris and his companions as he learns more about his magical heritage and fights to stop his half-brother’s reign of terror. It’s a fabulous series which starts with book one The Summoner.
If you could live in any fictional royal residence, which one would it be?
Skyhold from Dragon Age: Inquisition. I’m not sure if this was even a royal residence, however, the fortress does have a throne room which suggests it may have been at one time. It’s a stunning building and estate with so many amazing rooms, and it comes to symbolise a place of hope in the game.
The main character of the last fandom you experienced just became King/Queen of their universe; how do they react?
I’m currently catching up with Blue Bloods which is about a family called the Reagans who are pretty much the equivalent of police royalty. The great-grandfather is the former Police Commissioner of New York City and the grandfather is the current Police Commissioner. So I’m going to pick another TV show I’ve been watching recently; The Flash.
Barry Allen would sacrifice himself for the world and has done so before, but he would never want to be King. He would do everything in his power to abdicate the position to someone else. Being King would prevent him from being both a CSI and a hero, and he’s humble enough to believe that someone else would do a better job.
