May is a month filled with various science fiction related dates and holidays, including my favourite Star Wars Day so choosing science fiction as this month’s Six on a Sunday was an easy choice. As much as I would love to gush all about Star Wars, I’ve already done that and I’m actually not going to talk about it anymore in this post.  Science fiction is a genre that has been in my life since I was a kid and my interest in it has only grown further as an adult. I’m going to use today’s Seriously Geeky Sundays theme to take you on a bit of a journey through my science fiction interests and influences over the years. So please buckle up your seat belt, and don’t feed any alien species you may encounter along the way 😉

1. 80s/90s sci-fi cartoons

My interest in science fiction started way back in the 80s and 90s with cartoons such as Defenders of the Earth (pictured above), Captain Bucky O’Hare, He-man, She-Ra, Galtar and the Golden Lance, the Jetsons and of course, the legendary marvel animated series such as Spider-man, Silver Surfer, The Fantastic Four and The X-Men.

2. Stargate

The movie that started a franchise. I was just 9 when the movie was released in cinemas and probably about 10/11 when we finally got it on video and I watched it with my dad. I still remember watching Stargate in our living room with him. It blew both our minds away. It was just one of those films that just stuck in your minds because it was so different to anything that had come before. I remember Independence Day having a similar effect a few years later. I guess for the later generation Avatar would be the nearest science fiction comparison.

Despite my interest in the movie, it would be a long time before I actually watched the TV series in full and I still haven’t finished watching the spin-offs.

3. Classic Science Fiction Literature

When I studied English Literature at the University of Glasgow I studied Science fiction in my final year and it was fantastic. I was drawn to some of the original pioneers and I was blown away by H.G. Wells’ work, especially War of the Worlds. Forget the crappy Tom Cruise movie. Check out the original some time and you can understand why people freaked out in 1938 when it was turned into a radio broadcast. It is really disturbing in its original format.

4. Riddick Movies

Chris and I both have the same taste in science fiction movies. We’re not a massive fan of movie franchises such as Alien or Star Trek, but we both love the Riddick movies, Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. They’re probably two of our most rewatched movies.

5. Satellite Falling

I briefly mentioned Satellite Falling in Seriously Geeky Sundays week 5 Comic Books as one of my comic book recommendations. It was a random comic that I grabbed from my library and it quickly became one of my favourites. It’s about Lilly, the lone human on an alien world who fled earth (and her past) when it fell. By day she’s a cabbie, by night she’s a bounty hunter and as always when you leave a past behind it comes back to haunt you. Lily’s comes back in a big dramatic way and it’s a great story with wonderful artwork.

6. Bioshock Infinite

I tend to stick more to fantasy as a genre for video games, however, I do stray into science fiction now and again. My favourite so far has been Bioshock Infinite and I’m on my second playthrough of it. I played it once before and almost finished the game, but due to a computer break down I lost all my saved data. It was also so many years ago that I’ve forgotten a lot of the game so when I started it again in March it was almost like I was playing it for the first time 🙂
