Asking for a FriendRonnie Riley
Asking for a Friend by Ronnie Riley - Image is a cartoon style illustration set in a park, with a short-haired, pale-skinned person with short hair sitting cross-legged on the grass. They look to the side and are half-smiling. They are wearing an orange and white striped jumper and dark blue pants. They have a coral rucksack resting against their knee and books strewn around on the grass. They wear a bracelet on one hand. In the background there are two other people: one on the left lies on their back with a book on their face: they are light-skinned, dressed in dark blue with boots and have long, black curly hair that spreads out on the grass. A book, a ball, and an origami crane are next to them.
On the right there is a person lying on their front, with their hand propping up their chin: they are dark-skinned with dark short curly hair. They wear a bright bomber jacket, blue jeans, and rainbow converse type shoes. They have a book and an origami crane by them. The title says Asking for a Friend, in a white handwriting font. The subtitle is, fake friends, real problems, also in white. The author’s name is in black, at the bottom.Eden Jones has exactly three friends. And they’re all fake. From a web of lies and social anxiety to true friendship and queer joy; this is the wonderful second book from the author of the Indie Next List pick Jude Saves the World. Why go through the stress of making friends when you can just pretend? It works for Eden and their social anxiety… until their mom announces she’s throwing them a birthday party and all their friends are invited. Eden’s “friends,” Duke, Ramona, and Tabitha, are all real kids from school… but Eden’s never actually spoken to them before. Now Eden will do whatever it takes to convince them to be their friends–at least until the party is over. When things start to go better than Eden expects, and the group starts to bond, Eden finds themselves trapped in a lie that gets worse the longer they keep it up. What happens if their now sort-of-real friends discover that Eden hasn’t been honest with them from the very beginning? Author Ronnie Riley creates a world full of queer joy and all the ups and downs of true friendship.

They have full lips and no facial hair. They wear a blue jacket with a gray hood.A darkly funny and thoroughly queer mystery thriller with a touch of camp, for fans of Kara Thomas and Kit Frick by way of Only Murders in the Building.

When Gianna “Gigi” Ricci lands in detention again, she doesn’t expect the glorified study hall to be her alibi.

But when she and her friends receive a mysterious email directing them to her favorite teacher, Mr. Ford’s room, they find him lying in a pool of blood. But calling the math teacher’s death an accident doesn’t add up, and Gigi needs all the help she can get to find the truth. Luckily, she’s friends with her high school’s “mystery club,” and so with her best friend, Sean, and longtime crush, Mari, Gigi sets out to solve a murder.

But it turns out, murderers are extremely unwilling to be caught, and the deeper Gigi gets in this mystery, the more dangerous things become. Between fending off a murderer, continual flare-ups of her IBS, and her archnemesis turning flirtatious . . . making it out of junior year is going to be one killer problem.

With a wry, hilarious voice and a main character who is the walking definition of a disaster bi, this book is an ode to cozy mysteries, queer found families, and fighting for the people you love, no matter what.

Think CODA meets Jenny Han!

Lilah is tired of being stuck in the middle. At least, that’s what having a hearing loss seems like sometimes–when you don’t feel “deaf enough” to identify as Deaf or hearing enough to meet the world’s expectations.

Ready for a change, Lilah becomes a counselor at a summer camp for the deaf and blind, where she plans to brush up on her ASL. There, she also finds a community. There are British lifeguards, who are very cute and very hard to understand; a YouTuber, who’s just a bit desperate for clout; the campers Lilah’s responsible for (and maybe a bit overwhelmed by)–and there’s Isaac, the dreamy Deaf counselor who volunteers to help Lilah with her signing.

Romance was neveron the agenda, and Lilah’s not positive Isaac likes her that way. But all signs seem to point to love–unless Lilah’s reading them wrong? One thing’s for sure: Lilah wanted change, and things here . . . they’re definitely different than she’s used to.

She understands that calculus isn’t overwhelmingly beautiful to everyone, and that it typically kills the mood when you try to talk Python coding over beer pong. She understands people were surprised when golden boy Josh asked her out and she went from weird, math-obsessed Marlowe to half of their school’s couple goals. Unfortunately, Marlowe was surprised when Josh dumped her because he’d prefer a girlfriend who was more romantic. One with emotional depth.

But Marlowe has never failed anything in her life, and she isn’t about to start now. When she’s paired with Ashton Hayes for an English project, his black clothing and moody eyeliner cause a bit of a systems overload, and the dissonant sounds of his rock band make her brain itch. But when she discovers Ash’s hidden stash of love songs, Marlowe makes a desperate deal to unleash her inner romantic heroine: if Ash will agree to help her write some love letters, she’ll calculate the perfect data analytics formula to make Ash’s band go viral.

As the semester heats up with yearning love notes and late nights spent with a boy who escapes any box her brain tries to put him in, Marlowe starts to question if there’s really a set solution to love.
