Hello and welcome to day twenty-nine of my Star Wars challenge! For the next 31 days, I’ll be posting once a day with a Star Wars themed post. Some days I’ll be talking about just one thing, other days it’ll be about 5 things based on the prompt of the day.
The challenge is open to everyone and can be completed at any time. I thought that May, being home to May the 4th, sounded like the perfect time. If you’d like to join me this month then please do! You can find all the details over here.
DAY 29 – Scenes
It’s the penultimate day of my Star Wars challenge! There’s been a few bumps along the way but overall I’m really pleased to have completed it all. Today’s prompt is ‘scenes’ and I’m talking about my favourite scenes from the Star Wars movies. I’ve already covered my favourite lightsaber duels and battles so it’s time to talk about something a bit different.
Here are my 5 favourite Star Wars scenes!
Attack of the Clones
Obi-Wan loses a planet
“Mmm. Lost a planet, Master Obi-Wan has.”
During his search for the killer of Zam Wessell, Obi-Wan comes across a planet missing from the Jedi Archives. In this scene, he consults Master Yoda, and Yoda interrupts his lesson with a group of younglings to help Obi-Wan find the planet he has lost. I really liked this scene because it shows the camaraderie between the Jedi Masters, injecting a little humour into the film which begins the Clone Wars. It’s a time before the Jedi went to war when they were able to relax and tease one another about doing silly things like losing planets.
It also gives us a look at another aspect of Jedi life, the younglings, their training methods and a really beautiful light show with the galaxy map.
Revenge of the Sith
Obi-Wan confronts General Grievous
One of the things I love about Obi-Wan Kenobi is his penchant for mischief and big entrances. At the beginning of Revenge of the Sith, he crashes his ship into the hanger bay of Dooku’s ship and leaps out lightsaber blazing to meet the battle droids waiting. The most epic of his entrances have to be this one though. By this point, he had fought Grievous many times during the Clone Wars, as we’d later see in the TV Show, and here we see decide to take the upper hand. He watches from above, waiting until the right moment to interrupt and when he straights he just beams them a grin and a polite, “Hello there.”
It cracks me up every time and I don’t think anyone else could pull it off. He has just as many great one-liners and quips in the Clone Wars and I’m absolutely here for every single one of them.
The Empire Strikes Back
Leia Hears Luke
“Luke… We’ve got to go back.”
There are a lot of important scenes in The Empire Strikes Back, however, it’s this one right at the end of the film that means the most to me. It’s the moment that we get a brief glimpse at Luke and Leia’s connection through the Force, beginning to set us up for the big reveal in Return of the Jedi. It was also just so completely emotional, with Luke dangling from the satellite bedraggled and defeated and Leia absolutely emotionally shattered and distraught at losing her closest friend and the man she loved just as she realised how she felt about him.
Return of the Jedi
Luke and Leia on Endor
“The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it and… My sister has it.”
I mentioned this scene briefly on day 3 when I talked about my favourite scene from Return of the Jedi in great detail. The second big reveal of the Original Trilogy had been revealed to the audience earlier and we were waiting for the moment that Leia found out the truth about Luke and Darth Vader. There were a lot of ways this scene could have gone and in the end, it ended up being a beautiful heart-wrenching scene that prioritised the important things; caring about each other and ensuring that someone lived to fight another day.
Despite Leia’s pleas for Luke to walk away, he tells her he can’t, and in the easiest, quickest way possible tries to convey how important she is to the Rebellion. If he fails, if he dies at the hands of Vader or the Emperor then she is the only one with enough strength in the Force to withstand them.
Set to the backdrop of twilight on the forest moon the ambience of the entire scene is perfect. It’s the peace before the storm, and they both know that tomorrow everything they’ve worked so hard for will either come to fruition or they will die trying. Both have just found family and they’re both possibly about to lose it, and walking away to save your friends and the galaxy shows that Luke is just as strong as his sister.
The Last Jedi
Yoda visits Luke
“Page-turners, they were not. Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom, they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess. Ah, Skywalker… still looking to the horizon. Never here. Now, hmm? The need in front of your nose.”
Yoda turning up to give Luke a much-needed kick up the ass was probably one of The Last Jedi‘s most redeeming qualities. What we didn’t know as Yoda was laughing at Luke and then telling him that the library contained nothing Rey did not already possess was that she already possessed the entire contents of the library. Luke was burning an empty building in a fit of emotion, reacting to his own failures, while Rey had already taken matters into her own hands.
As Yoda talks to Luke about the responsibility of Masters and failure, we’re reminded of just how much wisdom he accumulated in his 900 years. He knows just the right thing to say to his former student to remind Luke of his duty, spurring him into action and giving the Resistance enough time to escape the First Order on Crait.
Over To You
Picking just a handful of scenes from nine movies was not easy, and the key component to these particular Star Wars scenes is that they made me feel something. They made me laugh, cry, or smile, and every single one of them gives me chills every single time I watch them.
Tomorrow is the final day of my Star Wars challenge and I’m going to be sharing 5 of my favourite Star wars quotes to finish things off.
What is your favourite Star Wars scene? What Star Wars scene gives you chills?
