Hello and welcome to day sixteen of my Star Wars challenge! For the next 31 days, I’ll be posting once a day with a Star Wars themed post. Some days I’ll be talking about just one thing, other days it’ll be about 5 things based on the prompt of the day.
The challenge is open to everyone and can be completed at any time. I thought that May, being home to May the 4th, sounded like the perfect time. If you’d like to join me this month then please do! You can find all the details over here.
DAY 16 – Organisations
We’re back on track today and it’s a challenging topic; organisations! Some of the ones on this list are hardly going to be a surprise, and probably lean slightly to being cliche. I mean, everyone who’s ever watched a Star Wars movie can name the Rebel Alliance and the Jedi Order, right? There’s a point though that you realise naming obscure answers is more about other people than yourself. Each of the organisations listed here means something to me and my love for Star Wars, that’s what this challenge is about, and hopefully, I’ll do an adequate job of explaining that by the end of this post!
Here are my top 5 Organisations in the Star Wars Universe 🙂
“They’ve no idea we’re coming. They’ve no reason to expect us. If we can make it to the ground, we’ll take the next chance, and the next, on and on until we win, or the chances are spent.“
I’m a sucker for the good guys, I always have been. I grew up in the 80s with stories of warrior princesses and heroes of all shapes and sizes fighting back against evil long before I ever watched my first Star Wars film. I was never going to side with the Empire. My heart and soul belonged to the Rebel Alliance from the moment Tarkin ordered the destruction of Alderaan. I wouldn’t truly understand the enormity of what the Rebels stood against until I was older and had felt the weight of a larger all-encompassing enemy press back against me for myself. Only then did I realise how hopelessly outgunned they were, how every day they continued to throw themselves into their work never knowing if they were actually making a difference. All they had was hope.
It was that hope that makes them so truly brilliant in my eyes. I’m sure other more cynical people would say they just got lucky, that they were fools, and perhaps they were. But history tells us that hope can get you through a lot of things. History shows us that hope is how World Wars end. It doesn’t just happen in movies.
“For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire.“
Star Wars wouldn’t be Star Wars without the Jedi Order. It’s that simple, and I appreciate each incarnation of the Jedi Order for their own strengths and weaknesses. One of the things I dislike about the new canon is the way Disney has dispensed with a Jedi Order by having Luke’s fledging new Order destroyed off-screen. At the moment the future of the Jedi – if there is one – is completely up in the air.
“Nightsisters know the dark side better than anyone. We grow up steeped in it, but we can use it as a tool and stay ourselves—unlike the Sith. That balance is what you must learn.“
The Nightsisters are one clan of the Witches of Dathomir and I love the whole idea of a planet ruled by matriarchal force-sensitive women. The magical nature of the Nightsisters first attracted me to them and their existence in the canon offers an alternative to the usual path of Jedi or Sith. It suggests that there are more paths available.
The Nightsisters use the Force in a unique way, casting spells to channel the force. We already know that there are other ways of using the Force, such as Sith alchemy. First mentioned in the Prequels with reference to Darth Plagueis and more recently the results were seen in Rise of Skywalker when Darth Sidious returned. As Disney seems keen to avoid a Jedi Order I really hope this is something that gets developed more, perhaps with Rey exploring the Galaxy in search of other force users in the books/comics.
“Ignite the Spark. Light the Fire.“
You may think that it’s redundant to have both the Rebel Alliance and the Resistance listed, or that they should be listed together. Personally I consider them to be two very separate and distinct organisations despite the overlap of some members. While both fought for freedom against tyranny, and the First Order was formed from a remnant of the Empire, the Resistance’s fight was different in one very important way – when the second Death Star was destroyed and the Empire was beaten they were supposed to have won, and they did. For several decades there was peace. People settled down, relaxed, had families, their children grew up and everything was good.
They had no idea that the First Order was out there, waiting, bidding it’s time to return and start a war again. I remember watching The Force Awakens and being heartbroken that people had no idea what had happened. Everything the Rebel Alliance had worked for had been wiped out of the history books as if it never happened. All their sacrifices were for nothing, and now the next generation was fighting to save the Galaxy they had been born into, a Galaxy that their parents had believed was safe.
I’m know that it was probably losing Ben to the dark side that came between Han and Leia, but I also wonder if Han also just couldn’t bear to do the same fight again especially now that he had a son. Seeing so many young people going to their deaths especially as a leader must have been excruciatingly difficult for Leia, and I wonder if Han just couldn’t do it.
If you’ve been keeping up with my posts you might remember me mentioning these fabulous ladies and gents in my first post. Created by Talon Karrde the Smuggles Alliance was a group of Smugglers and underworld criminals who united to work with the New Republic against the Empire. They had access to information and connections that the New Republic military didn’t and on many occasion were invaluable to helping fight the Empire. Over the years so many of its members ended up retiring and going into legitimate businesses that Karrde joked that they should just rename the organisation the ‘Ex-Smugglers Alliance’.
Over To You
There are an awful lot of organisations in the Star Wars universe, so this wasn’t an easy list to narrow down!
How about you guys; are you Team Jedi or Team Sith? Is there a secret organisation in the Star Wars universe that you love?
