We’re joining in the celebrations of Engineers Week by dedicating this week’s Seriously Geeky Sundays to everything engineering in fictional worlds. For centuries engineers have shaped the world we live in, transforming the world into something magical and unknown. During the era the reaction to the industrial revolution was so strong it created the fantasy, horror and science fiction genres we now know and love. Now it’s gone full circle and engineering features in the fictional worlds it created.

Join me today as I tell you about my favourite engineers and engineering themes for Seriously Geeky Sundays week 47!

It’s also time for another set of questions to be revealed. Check out March’s questions right here!

How to join in the fun!

Anyone can join in with the prompt! Just read below to find out more 🙂

  1. Seriously Geeky Sundays is a blog prompt and is designed to be completed on a blog or in a vlog. If you don’t have one then join in the fun by posting your answers in the comments each week! 🙂
  2. Please link back to this post when you post your answers to the prompt. This helps others join in the fun and also pings back to me so I can see your answers too! 🙂
  3. If you have a spare few minutes take some time to check out some of the other bloggers who have joined in Seriously Geeky Sundays – you never know who you might meet 🙂
  4. When promoting your posts to social media please use the hashtags #seriouslygeekysundays and/or #sgsun6 so others can find your posts.
  5. Please try to remember to use spoiler tags/warnings for brand new shows and movies.
  6. The whole point of Seriously Geeky Sundays is to have fun by expressing our geekiness and sharing it with each other. Sometimes people will say things you don’t agree with and that’s ok. The world would be a really dull place if we all acted the same way.

My answers for week #47

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 47 - Who is your favourite fictional engineer?

Who is your favourite fictional engineer?

It’s got to be Doc Brown from the Back to the Future franchise. He most definitely fits under the mad scientist category for question two as well, however, he conjures such fond memories for me that he’s always the first engineer that comes to mind. He’s such a character, bringing to life the field of engineering with his charisma and enthusiasm. He’s always brimming with energy and new ideas, ideas that are completely out there that push the boundaries of the field.

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 47 - While most engineers like to use their skills for good, some of them don’t; which “mad scientist” engineer caught your attention?

While most engineers like to use their skills for good, some of them don’t; which “mad scientist” engineer caught your attention?

You’ve got to be pretty big on the mad scientist vibe to come up with the equipment to capture ghosts when the entire world believes they don’t exist. Along with his fellow Ghostbuster Dr Ray Stantz, Dr Egon Spengler created the infamous proton packs used by the Ghostbusters. He’s known for his scientific ramblings that only one of the team (Ray) understands, his weird and beliefs that confound everyone else. Despite all this, there’s something loveable about this oddball.

In fandoms, engineering expands into new (and usually weird) fields; what one would you like to learn?

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of planetary engineering such as terraforming. The thought of being able to change dead planets or damaged areas into something habitable sounds absolutely amazing especially when our own planet is at risk due to climate change. Of course, it’s a field that often gets abused in science fiction so for me, it would be something I’d only want to learn and use for good. No terraforming already habited planets for me!

More importantly; who’s the class?

The Kryptonians of the DC Comics universe are one of the most technologically advanced races in the galaxy and experts in terraforming. Learning anything from them would be an honour and a privilege.

Famous engineers are often depicted in fandoms, which has been your favourite portrayal?

Sometimes I write questions with a specific character in mind and this is one such character. Several historical appear in Sanctuary having been given longevity and supernatural powers as a result of an experiment. One of them is the infamous engineer and scientist Nikola Tesla who has become a vampire and he is an amazing character. Tesla was a man born at the wrong time and as a vampire, he lived to see his ideas become reality. As a result, he became even more arrogant, and while he to act like a self-serving bastard he was instrumental during World War II.

He is a really interesting character, dynamic and charismatic, bringing to life a fascinating character from history. He’s the type of character you love to hate, who is too smart for his own good and I loved every moment he was on screen.

Which fictional engineers would you like to see team up for a mega engineering project?

Two are already mentioned in this post; Doc Brown and Nikola Tesla from Sanctuary. I would also bring Tesla’s old companion Dr Helen Magnus who is a multi-talented woman who has the extremely handy ability to see an item once and reconstruct it from memory.  Naturally, The Doctor has to be included in this dream team of engineers with all that knowledge from all time and space.
