Hello and welcome to day twenty-six of my Star Wars challenge! For the next 31 days, I’ll be posting once a day with a Star Wars themed post. Some days I’ll be talking about just one thing, other days it’ll be about 5 things based on the prompt of the day.
The challenge is open to everyone and can be completed at any time. I thought that May, being home to May the 4th, sounded like the perfect time. If you’d like to join me this month then please do! You can find all the details over here.
DAY 26 – Minor Characters
Over the course of this challenge, I’ve looked at various parts of the Star Wars universe, and for me personally each one is just as important at the next. It’s everything mixed together that makes Star Wars what it is. That includes the small characters that we only see once or twice. These minor characters can sometimes have a massive impact on the story.
So today I’m sharing with you 5 Star Wars Minor Characters that made a big impact.
99 was one of the many clones of Jango Fett, unfortunately, something went wrong during the cloning process and he was born with numerous physical and genetic defects. As a result, he was not allowed to serve in the clone army with his fellow clones, and so he chose to serve in his own way. He performed maintenance and janitorial duties on Kamino, helping the Clone Troopers as they trained and prepared to graduate.
He grew particularly close to one squad, Domino squad, who were having difficulties with their training and becoming a unifying squad. If it wasn’t for 99 inspiring one of their members to stay and work as a team the squad would never have graduated. Two members of Domino squad ended up joining the elite 501st ARC Trooper squad serving under Jedi’s Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano. They would never have gotten there if it hadn’t been for 99.
One of Poe Dameron’s parents, Lieutenant Shara Bey was a hero of the Rebel Alliance long before her son fought in the Resistance. She fought in the Alliance with her husband Kes Dameron, and their story is told in the comic series Shattered Empire as part of the Journey to The Force Awakens content. Shara was a decorated pilot and was assigned to missions with Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker after the Battle of Endor.
She saved so many lives by fighting in the war, but Shara also had a huge impact on her son. Despite losing her when he was six, he inherited his mother’s compassion and followed in her footsteps. She once told him that she and his father became involved with the Rebellion because people were suffering and they couldn’t sick back and do nothing. I think we can clearly say that Poe took that lesson to heart and followed by her example.
Over the years Padmé Amidala had multiple handmaidens and among them were Dormé, Sabé, Rabé, Cordé, and Eirtaé. Padmé’s handmaidens appeared to just be ladies in waiting, personal assistances to Padmé when she was Queen. However, much like their Mistress, Padmé’s handmaidens were trained to fight, and act as decoys to protect the Queen’s identity. This led to the death of Cordé in Attack of the Clones when an assassination attempt on Padmé’s life was successful and killed her handmaiden decoy.
After Padmé’s two terms as Queen were over Sabé remained on as her handmaiden and closest confident.
The Bendu was an incredible force-sensitive creature befriended by Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels. Ancient and filled with knowledge, the Benu lends the two Jedi his wisdom and aid multiple times and helps Kanan overcome many difficulties. Kanan’s Jedi Master perished in Order 66, interrupting his Jedi training and the Bendu provides him with help training Ezra, often in the form of guidance and support.
If you ever wondered exactly how Han Solo lost the Millenium Falcon, well this is the guy to blame. Serving as a waiter at Maz Kanata’s castle, Ducain always overheard smugglers talking about their adventures. So when Han turns up looking for some help Ducain jumps at the chance to work with a real legend. Maz even tells Han that Ducain is a hard worker.
Off they go to do the job, and Han leaves Ducain with the Falcon as he goes off to meet with their buyer. Big mistake. With his head filled with ideas of living the dream as a smuggler he just can’t help himself. Off he goes in the Falcon and that’s the last Han sees of it until The Force Awakens.
Ducain makes a big name for himself as a gunrunner and the guy who stole the Millenium Falcon, only to find himself working for The First Order without realising it. Remembering something that Han had said to him about doing what right being the most important thing he realises he’s made a huge mistake. Just as he’s about to take the Falcon back to Han he gets hijacked and the Falcon passes onto someone else.
While Rey is training with Luke on Ahch-To Chewie busies himself with fixing the Falcon back up and removing the many terrible modifications Ducain made to the Falcon while he had her.
Over To You
The Star Wars universe would have been a completely different place without these characters in it. From 99 helping Domino squad pass graduation to Shara Bey’s legacy leading Poe to become a hero of the Resistance, each of them had an impact on one or more characters central to the Saga.
