Happy Chinese New Year everyone! That’s right we’re giving you a break from the St Valentine’s Day chaos today by visiting the wonderful continent of Asia. It’s the penultimate week of Around the World in 8 Sundays and next week we’ll finish off the series with Africa. For now, join me as I talk about my favourite characters and celebrities from Asia.
How to join in the fun!

- Seriously Geeky Sundays is a blog prompt and is designed to be completed on a blog or in a vlog. If you don’t have one then join in the fun by posting your answers in the comments each week!
- Please link back to this post when you post your answers to the prompt. This helps others join in the fun and also pings back to me so I can see your answers too!
- If you have a spare few minutes take some time to check out some of the other bloggers who have joined in Seriously Geeky Sundays – you never know who you might meet
- When promoting your posts to social media please use the hashtags #seriouslygeekysundays and/or #sgsun6 so others can find your posts.
- Please try to remember to use spoiler tags/warnings for brand new shows and movies.
- The whole point of Seriously Geeky Sundays is to have fun by expressing our geekiness and sharing it with each other. Sometimes people will say things you don’t agree with and that’s ok. The world would be a really dull place if we all acted the same way.
My answers for week #46
Who is your favourite female character from this continent?
Kate Freelander joined the cast of Sanctuary in series 2 and she quickly became one of my favourite characters. Born in Mumbai and raised in Chicago, she never lost touch with her heritage and it featured in several episodes. Kate is a complicated character, joining the Sanctuary after working with the bad guys and changing sides. She spends a long time trying to prove herself, not because the other members of the team make her feel that way, but because she feels the need to do so. It’s something she does prove over and over again and is a capable and trusted member and friend.
How about a male character?
One of the things I love about Ryan Choi is his pure enthusiasm for everything; science, the unknown and life. He takes over as the Atom from Ray Palmer in the DC Comics universe and basically ends up diving into a completely unknown universe to find out what happened to his predecessor. It isn’t that he’s fearless, he certainly shows fear, it’s that he’s willing to take that leap and to see what happens and it’s such a beautiful thing to see.
There are so many talented people in the entertainment industry from this continent, who are your favourites?
From the first moment, I saw Michelle Yeoh in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies I’ve been amazed by the beauty, grace and skill she brings to every role I’ve seen in her since. Likewise, Donnie Yen is another actor who I’ve always been impressed with but it wasn’t until he starred in Rogue One that I learned more about him. He gives most of what he makes in his films to charity and lives on average means.
More recently younger Asian actors that have impressed me include Naomi Scott, Priyanka Chopra, Daniel Dae Kim, and Harry Shum Jr.
Since the 16th Century (Gullivers Travels), fictional Asian countries have appeared in fandoms. How many on this list are you familiar with?
Asia is home to some stunning locations; what is your favourite location from a fandom?
I was really impressed with the stunning locations in the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and it’s sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Filmed in the Indian state of Rajasthan, the locations vary from the bustling streets of India to historical sights and beautiful scenery.
From video games to animation and film, Asia has a large presence in the entertainment world. What product/fandom has had the biggest impact on you?
Unlike a lot of geeks Asian entertainment has not influenced my geeky interests that much. I’m not a fan of anime and I’ve not played many JRPGs, so for me, the impact is limited to one fandom; Final Fantasy XIV. Despite only being one game it’s had a significant impact as FFXIV is a completely different type of game to what I’ve played despite being familiar with MMORPGs.
