What’s in name

My answers for week #32

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 32 - Thinking of your name/alias, what is the first female character you think of that has the same name

Thinking of your name, what is the first female character you think of that has the same name? Do you like them?

The first character with the same name as me is a new one and that’s Heather After from the comic The Dreaming: Waking Hours. She’s the grand-daughter of someone with a really big connection to The Dream and I’m really interested to see where she goes as a character. I hope we see more of her. I do like her, she is a spunky character who is using her magic in an unconventional yet modern way and seems to have a generous heart. She’s well aware of what her family has done in the past and seems eager to avoid repeating those same mistakes as well as perhaps also making up for their sins too.

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 32 - How about a male character? How do you feel about them?

How about a male character? How do you feel about them?

Harry Dresden was the first male character to come to mind whose name begins with the same initial as me, and that’s probably because Peace Talks is sitting on the bookshelf in front of me as I write this! I love Harry, and not just because he’s the main character of one of my favourite Urban Fantasy series. I’m a big fan of any character who stands up for the little guy and tells people to go eff themselves no matter how big and important they are. Harry has a moral compass and he sticks to it even if it means doing the most dangerous, bonkers plan that usually risks his own life. It’s gotten him into a lot of sticky situations, but it’s also saved a lot of lives.

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 32 - What about an actor; what is the best and worst thing they’ve done?

What about an ; what is the best and worst thing they’ve done?

The actor with the same name as me that always comes to mind is the lovely Heather Graham. I’ve not actually seen her in that many things though, so I only have a few to choose from. Her best performance for me was in the movie From Hell and her time in Scrubs was also a highlight. She was absolutely hilarious and just a breath of fresh air every time she was on screen.

Her worst, out of what I’ve seen, is Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a funny film, but like all the women in the Austin Powers franchise she’s literally just there to look good and be a running joke. It was funny when I was a teenager but now as an older woman, I just look at those films and want to vomit. They’re meant to be a satirical comment on the James Bond franchise yet misses the boat entirely.

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 32 - What was your favourite soundtrack during your teens?

What was your favourite soundtrack during your teens?

My favourite soundtrack was the Coyote Ugly soundtrack. It was and still is so good! It has great tracks by Leanne Rimes (The Right Kind of Wrong is amazing) as well as the iconic The Devil went down to Georgia and the fantastic Boom Boom Boom. It’s a timeless soundtrack that I can listen to again and again, just as I can always rewatch the film.

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 32 - Go to a shelf/collection and count the letters of your name across or down. Tell us about the item you just picked out!

Go to a shelf/collection and count the letters of your name across or down. Tell us about the item you just picked out!

I’ve done plenty of shelfies and book tags so I decided to go to one of our DVD shelves this time. My name has seven letters in it and lucky number 7 is… Plunkett & Macleane! This 1999 movie is about a highwayman who strikes up a partnership with a gentleman when both of them are desperately in need of some cash. They become known as “the gentleman highwaymen” as they hold up the rich and relieve them of their goods.

While the plot isn’t the best, it’s stellar cast makes up for it and it is so funny. There are so many great British stars in it with Robert Carlye and Jonny Lee Miller headling alongside Liv Tyler. You’ve got the wonderful Alan Cumming playing the flamboyant Lord Rochester, Michael Gambon as Liv’s father, and in the mix is Ben Miller, David Walliams, Noel Fielding, Matt Lucas, Tom Ward and Claire Rushbrook. It’s a wonderfully fun Victorian romp that doesn’t take itself seriously.

Have you ever heard a characters name and formed an opinion about them before you met them? Was your opinion right?

All the time in books as there’s no physical appearance to distract me or influence my opinion. I can’t think of a specific example, but sometimes I’m right and sometimes I’m not. There are a few names that I’m horribly biased at because of the experiences I’ve had in life. I’m automatically negative towards those characters, seeing their actions in a bad light and knit-picking straight away. Sometimes it means I uncover plots before the author reveals them and other times I’m way off track!
