So I’ve taken a little bit of liberty with this week’s Seriously Sundays theme as this upcoming week contains both my anniversary (tomorrow, the 5th) and my birthday is at the end of the week (the 9th). That sounded like a good excuse to dive into the topic of celebration in fandoms. From the dramatic weddings and surprise parties, it also includes  us as fans celebrating personal milestones in video games or film anniversaries as a community. When you think about it celebration it emcompasses a lot more than just blowing out candles.

As always this week’s questions are designed to get down to the nitty gritty of the topic as well as sharing our favourite fandoms. So read on for birthdays, weddings and some thoughts on what celebration means to me and our other Seriously Sundays participants.

How to join in the fun!

Anyone can join in with the prompt! Just read below to find out more 🙂

  2. Please link back to this post when you post your answers to the prompt. This helps others join in the fun and also pings back to me so I can see your answers too! 🙂
  3. If you have a spare few minutes take some time to check out some of the other bloggers who have joined in Seriously Sundays – you never know who you might meet 🙂
  4. When promoting your posts to social media please use the hashtags #seriouslygeekysundays and/or #sgsun6 so others can find your posts.
  5. Please try to remember to use spoiler tags/warnings for brand new shows and movies.
  6. The whole point of Seriously Sundays is to have fun by expressing our geekiness and sharing it with each other. Sometimes people will say things you don’t agree with and that’s ok. The world would be a really dull place if we all acted the same way.

Celebration Time

My answers for week #27

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 27 - What is your favourite celebration scene from a fandom?

What is your favourite celebration scene from a fandom?

There’s been so many over the years, however, it’s Fitz-Simmons wedding in the 100th episode of Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that really sticks with me. After everything that couple had been through it was great to see them finally get their wedding and have something so happy and wholesome happen. I think I’m putting off finishing the show because I just want to keep this happy little bubble alive in my head and I know that the chances of it staying that way are slim to none (no spoilers please, not even subtle hints).

Seriously Geeky Sundays #27 - Celebration Time

Which character’s birthday was the most memorable?

While the thought of Joss Whedon makes me want to vomit (if you don’t know why then read this letter by his ex-wife Kai Cole wrote about his behaviour), there is only one answer for this question; Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy Summer’s birthdays were always memorable and not in a good way. At one point even Spike says to her “So you ever think about not celebrating your birthday? Just to try it, I mean?“.

From her first sexual experience turning her vampire boyfriend Angel evil, to being tripped of her slayer powers and everyone being trapped in her house by a vengeance demon, Buffy’s birthday’s have been one hell of a ride – quite literally.

What does celebration mean to you as fan?

To me it means community. Even when you’re celebrating that milestone you just reached in a video game or finally finishing that TV show, you’re part of something a whole lot bigger than just you. There are other people who know that same feeling, who have done the same thing and probably shed the same tears along the way. They’re there to pat you on the bat, cheer you on and celebrate with you.

It’s the driving force behind fan conventions. We go to them to celebrate the things we in fandom. It brings the community together in fan driven creations like blogs, fan art, fanfiction, streaming and more. We celebrate by sharing, by telling people what we love and I think that’s absolutely wonderful.

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 27 - What was the last fandom related achievement or milestone you celebrated?

What was the last fandom related achievement or milestone you celebrated?

I’ve been working my way through certain World of Warcraft achievements lately and the most recent big achievements have been the family pet battles. Pet battles are pretty much Pokemon for World of Warcraft and there are achievements to win 10 battles pvp (player vs player) with a team of all one family. Last week was pet week, a week which gives bonus pet experience and a quest for pvp pet battles, so I got to work on this achievement. I got 6 out of 10 of the meta achievements done! It went a lot better than I expected 😀

It also took a huge dent out of my achievement to win 1000 pvp pet battles. I’m now at 939 out of 1000!

Seriously Geeky Sundays Week 27 - Have you ever had/been to a fandom themed celebration?

Have you ever had/been to a fandom themed celebration?

I’ve only ever been to one and it was my own! For my 18th birthday party I had a pirates themed party because I was obessed with Pirates of the Carribean at the time. It’s a pretty easy theme to do as anyone who isn’t sure what to dress up as just needs to find a strippy top and hey presto, you’re a pirate! I went for a bit more creative and tried to do a corset-style outfit as you can see in the photo above. I found a black tank top with a lace decoration which I put on over a long sleeve blouse and matched it with a long black skirt. I even had a gold coin to go with it.

Do you celebrate any important dates such as movie or video game release anniversaries?

Not seriously; I might retweet something about them now and again, but honestly, most of them are just another day to me. The only one I really pay attention to is the World of Warcraft one each year because it has an in-game event and it’s a celebration that means a lot to me personally.

  1. Buffy’s Birthdays are very special indeed. It’s also kind of weird Joyce almost never got involved! Then again the mother allowed her friends to select what to put on Buffy’s headstone.. which I always found kinda weird.

Anyway Buffy was always a show about Teenager problems that were disguised between monster allegories so I guess it’s just the show saying.. your a year older now! Nothing change! Life still stucks.. which was accurate for my teens at least! Birthday parties on the hellmouth always seem interesting! Just like Halloween almost always was interesting to!
