The Geeky Childhood Tag was the winner of the last Blog Tag Game poll in July and yes, as it’s now September, I am extremely late in completing this one. Double combo of fatigue and then a wrist injury are to blame and you can read all about that in my monthly update coming week.

For now it’s time to talk about my geeky childhood courtesy of this tag which was created by A Geek Girl’s Guide.

Where did your geek come from? Parents? Siblings? Destiny?

Equal parts my parents, my grandparents and my own interests. I grew up surrounded by people who didn’t think was a bad thing and frequently shared what they knew with me. I was taken to museums, taught about history, antiques and stamp collections – pretty much the basis for the perfect /geek. Then as I grew up I added in my own things as I started reading fantasy and sci-fi, moving onto to movies, tv shows and eventual games.

The Geeky Childhood Tag - Reading

The First Geeky Thing You Got Into

The first geeky thing I got into was reading, and my love for stories continues to this day. Like many geeks I dabbled with writing my own stories as a kid and that later developed into fanfic and then roleplaying.

The Geeky Childhood Tag - She-Ra Princess of Power

Favorite TV Show as a Kid

She-Ra: Princess of Power was top of my list but I watched a whole bunch of 80s and 90s which you can read more about in the 90s TV Tag!

Favorite Movie as a Kid

It actually wasn’t Star Wars! I’m not 100% sure which one it was, but it was definetely a Disney movie. The Liong King, Beauty and the Beast and Robin Hood are the likely suspects.

Favorite Game as a Kid

I didn’t play games properly until I was in my early 20s, however, I did love Bomberman.

Favorite Book as a Kid

My favourite books as a kid were The Saddle Club series by Bonnie Bryant, The Famous Five, and The Adventure Series by Enid Blyton, and Animal Ark series by Lucy Daniels. I didn’t get into horror and fantasy until my early teens.

Favorite Memory as a Kid

I was in my school’s choir in and it was the 60 year anniversary of the fire that destroyed the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1936. The Crystal Palace was the second home to the Great Exhibition, a historical exhibition organised by Henry Cole and Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, in 1851. It’s a huge part of the local history of where I grew up, and all the choirs from the local primary schools got together to perform in a show to commemorate the anniversary of the fire. While no one was killed in the fire, the building was completely destroyed and never rebuilt. It was a huge loss of culture and the show was all about the creation of the exhibition, and the fire.

I also met Enid Blyton’s daughter, Gillian Baverstock, her only living relative and owner of her estate (at least then) when I was in primary school. She was a guest at one of our summer fetes. grew up in East Dulwich which is close to where I grew up.

The Geeky Childhood Tag - George Kirrin
Jemima Rooper as George Kirrin

A Character You Looked Up To as a Kid

George Kirrin from the Famous Five; she’s fearless, bold and never ever took crap from anyone. I was a tomboy as a kid and I’m not going to lie; George was most definetely an idol!

The Geeky Childhood Tag - E.T.

A Character That Scared You as a Kid

E.T. scared the living hell out of me. It all started with my aunt buying me this creepy looking E.T. plushie when she went on a trip to Florida. It freaked me out so much my parents had to take it out of my room. It haunted me for years, and it was only when I was an adult that I decided I should actually try watching the film again. I was a grown up, I could handle it.

I ended up sobbing my eyes out – and it wasn’t from fear. /facepalm
