Hello and welcome to day five of my Star Wars challenge! For the next 31 days, I’ll be posting once a day with a Star Wars themed post. Some days I’ll be talking about just one thing, other days it’ll be about 5 things based on the prompt of the day.
The challenge is open to everyone and can be completed at any time. I thought that May, being home to May the 4th, sounded like the perfect time. If you’d like to join me this month then please do! You can find all the details over here.
DAY 5 – Game
While it would have been more fitting for the Sith prompt to be on today, Revenge of the 5th, it’s also really fitting for me that ‘game’ is today’s prompt. In most of the Star Wars video games, I’ve played the Sith have played a vital role as antagonists and protagonists. Although I’ve only completed three Star Wars video games I’ve tried my hand at a few others so today I’m discussing my experience with Star Wars video games. The ones I’ve enjoyed, the ones I’ve tried and never finished, the ones I really want to try and the ones that still sit on my backlog.
Let’s start at the finish line and work backwards:
Completed Video Games
As discussed in day 1, I really enjoyed Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic I and II (KOTOR), and these were my the first Star Wars games I completed. They were actually some of the first games I completed on my own too so they mean a lot to me because of that. As discussed in my Games that define us piece I was late to video games and grew up thinking I couldn’t play video games. Therefore, KOTOR represents more than just s series of games that I enjoyed.
As soon as a Star Wars MMORPG was announced back in 2008 I knew I had to play it. Both my fiance and I applied for the beta and got it, and we’ve been playing Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) ever since. Since we play several MMORPGs we don’t necessarily play it 365 days a year, and we recently went back to SWTOR. It’s a game we both thoroughly enjoy for the storylines, gorgeous landscapes and classes. There really is nothing like jumping through the air with a lightsaber in hand or force choking the life out of someone.
With each class having its own individual storyline there is so much to experience and that’s before you even get to the multiple expansions that have come along. It’s also free to play which is great if you can’t keep up with a monthly subscription.
Alternatively, you can view a list of my SWTOR characters here.
Games I’ve Tried
I have quite a few Star Wars games as a result of a Star Wars Humble Bundle several years back and Chris also bought me one of the Lego games. I’ve tried a few of them with mixed success. I couldn’t get on with the Lego game which was a shame and I’d like to go back to it at some point. It seems that the controls just don’t translate well from controller to keyboard even though it is a PC version, and although we have a controller for Windows I can’t use it (disability reasons). I’m not 100% if it was the game or just me so I want to at least try again as I couldn’t even get passed the first part of the game. I just got so stressed out and upset at not being able to do it, and it triggered my PTSD. Back then I didn’t know that (I didn’t even know I had PTSD) so returning to it with a fresh look and better mental health will be a good idea.
I’ve always been told how good Jedi Knight – Jedi Academy is/was, however, the graphics are now so old that I find it really difficult to play. I’m a big fan of remastered games and I now don’t buy old games unless there is a remastered version as I have several older games sitting there that I’ve not been able to play for this very reason.
The other Star Wars game I tried was the first Star Wars MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies and I just couldn’t get on with it all. It just felt so backwards compared to World of Warcraft which at that point was the only one I had to compare it to. Even now with several other MMORPGs and games under my belt I still feel that it was overly complicated and not new player-friendly. Back then I remember being so disappointed because I so wanted a Star Wars MMORPG to enjoy, and it looked great until I tried to actually play it.
In My Backlog
I have the following Star Wars games in my backlog:
- Star Wars: Battlefront II
- Star Wars: Dark Forces
- Star Wars: Empire at War
- Star Wars: Jedi Knight – Dark Forces II
- Star Wars: Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast
- Star Wars: Republic Commando
- Star Wars: Starfighter
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II
Out of this list, the only one I’ve started to play was The Force Unleashed and although I enjoyed it, I’ve not continued to play because I wasn’t really in the mood to play it at the time. It’s a game that was a bit more challenging for me when I started it and may still be now, but sometimes that’s a good thing. I’ve read The Force Unleashed novel so I know where the story goes and would like to experience the game for myself.
A lot of the games on this list I really want to play for lore reasons (namely Star Wars: Dark Forces, Star Wars: Empire at War, and Star Wars: Jedi Knight – Dark Forces II), but they’re even older than Jedi Knight – Jedi Academy so the graphics are terrible. Battlefront II only has a tiny solo campaign, however, I’m happy to just play that and be done. I have zero interest in playing the game with other people.
Game I Want to Play
Jedi: Fallen Order is the latest Star Wars video game and the only one I don’t have; it’s also the one I want to play the most. I’ve heard so many good things about this game and it looks absolutely incredible.
Over To You
I hope that the new canon and the success of Jedi: Fallen Order will result in more Star Wars video games being made, or some of the older ones being remastered. KOTOR I and II are considered by many to be among the best games of their time so there would be a lot of interest in the release of a remastered edition.
How about you; what are your thoughts on Star Wars video games? Have you tried any? Do you have a favourite game? What ones didn’t you like? Share your thoughts in the comments 🙂
