Seriously Geeky Sundays May Edition

I was feeling under the weather last week and then had a busy week so I’m a bit behind in getting these out this month. My apologies! May had some deliciously random monthly events that just spoke to me of tropes which lead to some creative questions this month which I hope you’ll enjoy 😉 We also have a a week dedicated to comic books, fictional detectives and our 6 on a Sunday this month is science fiction. There’s a lot of Science Fiction themed days this month, most notably May the 4th be with you at the very start, and 6 on a Sunday is perfect way to celebrate which ever one is your flavour of Sci Fi 🙂

About Seriously Geeky Sundays

Taking place every Sunday there are six questions for bloggers to answer. You can pop over to the Seriously Geeky Sundays page for more information and see the themes for the next four months. You can take part every week or just pop in when a week catches your fancy. Every week I post my own answers and include a link-up for you to pop your own link in so others can check them out your post too.

If you’re not able to take part on a Sunday then you’re welcome to post under the alternative title of ‘Seriously Geeky Series’ anytime during the week so you don’t miss out! Check out the new FAQ for more details.

Please Note – The word is used in questions as shorthand for ‘book/TV show/movie/video game/etc.’ Please feel free to replace ‘fandom’ with whatever term or media that works best for you.

Seriously Geeky Sundays May 2021 questions - It's time for Seriously Geeky Sundays May 2021 Questions with themes including comic books, science fiction, detectives, tropes and best friend romances.

May’s Questions

Here are this month’s questions.

2nd – Comic

Normally the 1st of May is Free Comic Book Day, however, due to the pandemic, the organisers have chosen to move it to August with the hope of being able to celebrate it when stores are open again. I considered changing this week’s theme and then chose not to; it might not be Free Comic Book Day but we can still celebrate our love of comics 🙂

  • Let’s start at the beginning; what was your first comic book?
  • Which comic did you read recently?
  • Which comic series would you recommend to someone just starting to read comics?
  • What comic series do you have on your TBR (to be read) list?
  • What are some of your favourite comic book series/titles?
  • Who are your favourite comic book artists?

9th  – Moving On

Did you know that May is National Moving month (or that such a thing existed?), nope, neither did I. Moving is a typical plot prompt used in fandoms to start a story, inject new characters or just shake things up a little when they get stale. So this week we’re asking you to think about what happens when characters move in or away in your fandoms.

  • What was the most recent that started with someone new moving to town?
  • Tell us about your favourite character who left home to find their fortune.
  • Sometimes moving to a new place can put a character exactly where they’re supposed to be; who does this make you think of?
  • Not all new neighbours are benign, sometimes the devil comes to town (literally). Who was the most interesting villain to come to town?
  • Not everyone sticks around; no would be complete without the wandering passerby. Which one stuck in your mind?
  • Which character shook things up just a bit too much and made a complete mess of things?

16th  – Detectives

Detectives are one of those wonderful character types that you find in almost every fandom, or they can exist entirely alone in their very own genre. They mix things up, putting people on edge or colluding with them to work a problem.

  • When you think of fictional detectives, who is the first one that springs to mind?
  • Do you have a favourite fictional detective?
  • What featuring a detective do you enjoy the most?
  • Which fictional detective would you like to shadow for a day?
  • The infamous Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle has been adapted many times now and in many formats; do you have a favourite?
  • Bloggers have started to go missing and you have been given the task of putting together the greatest detectives in the world to find them! Who do you pick? (** excluding Sherlock Holmes because everyone is going to pick him.)

23rd  – Six on a Sunday: Science Fiction

Starting new this year one week a month will just have a theme and no questions. It’s in the spirit of memes that are no longer active and to give us all a week once a month. The theme can be answered anyway you wish and there is no right or wrong answer. If the subject was ‘science fiction movies’ you could discuss your favourites or the upcoming you’re looking forward to. As long as there are six of them you’re good!

It was “talk like Yoda” Day on the 21st and it’s Towel Day today, so this week’s Six on a Sunday theme is Science Fiction!

30th  – My best friend’s romance

We’ve got all the tropes this month, and thanks to another national month event we bring Date Your Mate Month (I really wish I could make these things up…). In every fandom, there is at least one couple where a friend has dated their mate and sometimes it works, sometimes the results are disastrous.

  • Name the last two fictional friends who ended up as a couple and tell us if it worked out or not.
  • Which two best friends make up your favourite fictional couple?
  • What was the worst fictional friend hookup you’ve seen in a fandom?
  • Who tried the dating game and ended up staying friends?
  • What dating experiment ended up a disaster and how bad did it get?
  • The date your mate trope; in your opinion is it a yay or a nay?
