Blaugaust Promptapalooza 2020 day 13 - What are the things that get you excited in life?

Hello and welcome to Just Geeky By! My name’s Heather and it’s my pleasure to be your host for today’s Blaugust Promptapalooza hosted by the lovely Belghast. Today’s prompt is “What are the things that get you excited in life?” and I have to admit it took some thinking to narrow this one down a bit so that it didn’t end up an endless ramble! I’m someone who is passionate about a lot of things and finding something new to be excited about doesn’t diminish my excitement for something else, it just enhances it. Read on and I’ll explain what I mean!

Tomorrow Chestnut of Gamer Girl Confessions will be hosting the next prompt which will is “Tell us about a person/s or thing/s that has greatly influenced you” so don’t forget to swing on by Chestnut’s blog to check that out!

Blaugaust Promptapalooza - What are the things that get you excited in life? Knowledge!

Knowledge

I grew up surrounded by people who cared about the world around them and passed on what they had learned to me. I’m an only child and while my extended family is large, I only had a strong relationship with my parents and grandparents. Each of them taught me different things, and over time I became something of what I call a knowledge sponge. Knowledge excites me. I like to learn new things about anything and everything, and it’s one of the reasons why a Masters in Information and Library Studies suited me so well. I remember one of our assignments was to research three random subjects we were given and write up a summary report about them. I loved it because it was an excuse to learn something about random topics I’d never think to look up on my own.

While I tend to go by geek most of the time, as you can probably guess I’m well and truly a nerd too. For me personally, the two come hand in hand; the knowledge I gather enhances my geeky hobbies. I don’t do a critical assessment like I was taught at University, it’s more like an overlay in my head that appears while I’m reading a book or experiencing a movie for the first time. I’ll catch references to architecture in the artwork, or connections to critical thinking or mythology that deepen my understanding of what the author is talking about. Everything connections to something else and for me that’s beautiful, it’s enriching and exciting. I love those little connections!

Blaugaust Promptapalooza - What are the things that get you excited in life? Stories & Mysteries!

Stories & Mysteries

Stories to me are just another type of knowledge. History, after all, is the story of the past. I devour stories in any shape and form; books and comics being the most obvious format, but also movies, tv shows, video games, board games and so on. This is the core of what being a geek is to me. I want to know about the lives of the characters, where they’re from, where they are and where they’re going.

I seek out their stories and follow the mysteries as they unravel. They ensnare me, holding me captive as they feed me tantalising tidbits of information, just enough to keep me going. I follow the breadcrumbs whether it be flicking the pages of the book, following the scenes of a movie/tv show or working my way through a quest in a video game. Each step taking me closer to unravelling the mystery and learning the full story. The journey is as exciting as the ending, and sometimes it’s a bittersweet ending when the stories for those characters end. That’s one of the reasons why I prefer MMORPGs to other video games, book series to stand-alone novels and TV shows to movies; the story continues.

Blaugaust Promptapalooza - What are the things that get you excited in life? World-Building!

World-Building

Then there is the world that these stories take place, the universes where the characters live in which have so many dimensions to then. Nothing quite excites me like world-building – when it’s done well that is! Bad world-building is really quite depressing.

If you’re thinking ‘hey you sound like a roleplayer and/or writer!’ you’d be right 😀 When I first found the internet I wandered straight into the world of online roleplaying and for many years that community was my home. It’s probably not the type of roleplaying you’re familiar with; there are no dice rolls to determine actions and no stats. It’s much more like an ongoing novel written by multiple people. It’s called play by post aka pbp (or back in the day when there were email groups, play by email aka pbem) or text-based roleplaying. One person writes something, and then someone else replies, and so on. I didn’t just participate in games I also created them from scratch, creating entire worlds which other people played in.

Now I am older I no longer feel the need to be in the story, to have that control. I can sit back and enjoy the ride as I enjoy the works of others. Writing is harder now, and when I am able to write it comes in smaller snippets, slowly building the mass of ideas in my head into something coherent.

Blaugaust Promptapalooza - What are the things that get you excited in life? Items!

Items

I considered the subtitle of ‘merchandise’ for this section, however, that felt too inadequate, too limiting. Items is a much broader term and it does herald from the gamer in me, yet it correctly covers everything I’m about to talk about. I like to have a physical representation of what I like, what makes me happy. My passions made manifest. This can be merchandise such as geeky t-shirts and Funko Pops, fanart, or virtual items like my pet, mount and toy collection. Even in a more abstract sense my achievements in games, especially World of Warcraft which is my longest played game, are like a set of items too. They’re memories given a virtual form.

This all sounds really materialistic I know, so what does this have to do with the prompt? It’s their link to everything I’ve already talked about. Looking over at my bookshelf as I write this and seeing my Gizmo and Illidan Funko Pops makes me smile. They’re both utterly adorable and I was so excited when I got them! Wearing geeky fashion items and being asked about them especially at conventions is one of the best feelings. It’s that feeling of a shared love for something that you both have in common. And that thought leads me on to my next topic…

Blaugaust Promptapalooza - What are the things that get you excited in life? Community!

Communities

I’m an extroverted introvert; while I like my alone time I also like sharing things with other people and one of the things I really love to do is geek out with other people in a safe inclusive environment. The latter part is really important to me as a disabled woman because I’ve had my fair share of dealing with being told that women don’t game, they can’t be geeks etc. I’ve stood in a games store and had the male sales assistant completely ignore me and talk just to my fiance. There’s a lot of wonderful geeks (of all genders) out there and I’m proud to be a part of a community that hosts events like the Blaugaust Promptapalooza which anyone can take part in. This is my first time taking part in Blaugust and it was so great to be able to jump in wholeheartedly without any barriers.

That to me is what the geek/nerd community is about; sharing what we love with each other in our own unique ways. Continuing to find ways to do that which invite everyone to do it with us while also doing our own thing. Never saying to someone ‘you’re doing it wrong’ or ‘no you can’t do that’ because that is not what being a geek or nerd is about. We’re the ones who do the things that others are afraid to do because it might be embarrassing or “uncool” and we’re damn proud of it.

Whether it’s blogging, streaming, creating fan art, roleplaying, writing or doing whatever it is you do. Creating content and being part of the geek/nerd community is what really excites me and I don’t think it will ever stop being something that makes me smile.

Over to you

I ended up opting for a more philosophical approach to today’s Blaugust Promptapalooza prompt rather than listing a bunch of things that excite me. For those who don’t know I run a weekly prompt every Sunday and quite often I’m talking about my favourite things and what I love. I’ve also previously done a tag with 50 things that make me happy. So it felt a little repetitive for me to just make another list of things.

What about you guys? What excites you?

I’d love to hear from you! If you’re taking part in today’s prompt please pop your link in the comments or link to this post so I get a pingback and can check out your answers 🙂
